Transportation Issue & Action Campaign

Because transportation is essential for our community’s public health, economic development, and the health of our voluntary associations.

VIA is working to bring county-wide, door-to-door demand-response public transit to Rockingham County.

How This Works:

  • The service is available to any Harrisonburg/Rockingham County resident who is going to, from, or within the county.

  • The rider makes a reservation up to 24 hours in advance to get picked up at home, taken to the destination, and taken back.

  • The ride can be for any reason - work, medical appointments, shopping, etc.

  • The service is operated by an existing, state-qualified transit operator, who would extend their services here.  Transit operators in counties adjacent to ours already operate this type of service and are excited to expand to our community!

80% of the funding for public transit comes from state and federal dollars.  Right now, our tax dollars are funding transit in other cities.

We are leaving money on the table!

Timeline:

  • Fall 2024 - Valley Interfaith Action organized $200,000 from local employers and nonprofits  to leverage $800,000 of state transit funding.

  • Spring 2025 - Virginia Regional Transit applied to operate a 2-year pilot program to provide county-wide, door-to-door transit Monday through Friday, 6 am - 6 pm.

  • July 2025 - Virginia Department of Rail & Public Transit and the Commonwealth Transportation eliminated funding for all new rural transit service.

This is unacceptable.  We are now working to restore rural transit funding in Virginia beginning with Rockingham County!
